    Johnny CANNON naît le 5 mai 1932 à Grenada, Mexique. Il commence à jouer du saxophone à l'âge de 10 ans et joue dans des groupes de Memphis, Tennessee dans sa jeunesse. Au milieu des années 50, il rejoint le groupe de l'artiste de chez  Sun Records : Billy Lee RILEY (The LITTLE GREEN MEN). Il joue sur la plupart des hits des années 50's de SUN RECORDS.

   En 1959, il débute avec le  BILL BLACK COMBO , (l'un des plus populaires groupes instrumentaux de cette époque) aux Etats-Unis et aux Bahamas, au saxophone. On voit le groupe dans tous les principaux shows de télévision de l'époque, dont The Ed Sullivan Show, The Merv Griffin Show, Dick Clark's American Bandstand, et The Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, MD. Il y reste pendant presque deux ans.

   En 1961 il quitte le BILL BLACK COMBO, signe chez Hi et enregistre le célèbre instrumental 'Tuff' (un titre datant des années 20's). Il reste chez Hi jusqu'à la fin de ce label dans les années 70's. Il enregistre ensuite pour d'autres petits labels et apparait sur l'album 'the Class Of '55' avec  Jerry Lee LEWIS , Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Il a enregistré 52 albums et 37 simples.
