Groupe australien de Surf venant de la banlieue de Sydney. A la fin des années 50, un certain nombre de jeunes forment un groupe dont les membres changent fréquemment. Le groupe dans sa composition définitive prend forme à partir de 1961 avec Peter HOOD (batterie), Theo PENGLIS (guitare et guistare rythmique), Bosco BOSANAC (basse) et Eddy MATZENIK (guitare). Ce dernier est rapidement remplacé par Jim SKAITHITIS (guitare). Cette formation restera la même pour tous les enregistrements. Ils jouent les standards instro de l'époque de JOHNNY & The HURRICANES, des SHADOWS ou des VENTURES. Kenny Shane dans le style de Cliff Richard devient leur chanteur. Leur nom provient d'une publité avec "ATLANTIC PETROL". Lorsque Kenny Shane part du groupe en 1963, ils restent instrumental. Leur agent Joan King les pousse à devenir professionnel et à faire le tour des majors pour pr°senter leurs d°mos. Ils ont peu de succès car ils sont jugés trop différents de ce qui se faisait alors. Jusqu'à ce qu'ils tombent sur Sven Libaek de CBS. Ils auditionnent dans son bureau et S. Libaek est impressionn° par leur son et le fait qu'ils composent leurs titres. Ils enregistrent leur premier simple 'Moon Man / Dark Eyes'. En avril 1963, ils écrivent 'Bombora'. C'est est un terme aborigène désignant de grandes vagues venant s'écraser sur les rochers. La vague du surf éclate à cette époque, ils rejoignent naturellement le mouvement. Ils sortent leur deuxième simple 'Bombora / Greensleeves' en octobre 1963. C'est un succès immédiat. Il atteint le top des charts et sort dans de nombreux pays (Etats-Unis, Europe, Asie) Avant d'enregistrer leur premier album 'Bombora', ils sortent 'The Crusher' qui devient également un hit. 'Bombora' est suivi du second album 'Stomping Time' en décembre de la même année.
The ATLANTICS assurent un show promotionnel à Lane Cove (Sydney) en d°cembre 1963 pour la sortie de leur album 'Now it's stomping time' sur CBS records. (Réf : R. Lastdrager - The TOMMYS) Leur troisième disque 'The Explosive Sounds' en avril 1964. Avec 'Rumble and Run / The Wild Ones', il reviennent au son de leurs tout premiers simples. La beatlemania met un frein à leur succès. Ils sortent des titres de Chet Atkins, mais leur réputation 'surf' leur colle à la peau et les dessert. Ils font une tournée à la fin de 1964 dans le Far East australien qui leur apporte un temps, une nouvelle popularité;. Enfin, ils tentent d'enregistrer des adaptations de theme de film ('Goldfinger', 'Peter Gunn'). Ils demandent finalement à CBS d'arrêter leur contrat. Le groupe devient un groupe vocal à la fin des années 60 et disparaît. En 1999, The ATLANTICS sont de retour pour le nouveau millénaire avec un superbe album 'Flight Of The Surf Guitar' (2000). Deux autres albums suivent : 'The Next Generation' en 2001 et 'Point Zero' en 2003.
