MG = Memphis Group
BOOKER T. Jones (Né en 1944 à Memphis, Tennessee) a commencé à travailler comme musicien de studio chez Stax Records en 1960, comme un membre des TRIUMPHS et des MAR-KEYS dont "Duck" DUNN et Steve CROOPER font aussi partis.
Leur travail de studio leur prenant la plupart de leur temps, ils ont peu l'occasion de faire des apparitions personnelles. Cet orchestre maison de chez Stax accompagne Otis Redding, Sam & Dave et Wilson Pickett en tournée et studio. Presque par accident ils se retrouvent dans les hits parade en solo avec 'Green Onions', NÉ3 des charts US en 1962.
A 28 ans BOOKER T joue de l'orgue, du piano, du sax bariton, du vibraphone, de la basse et de la guitare. Il écrit également des arrangements lorsque c'est nécessaire. BOOKER a surtout étudié le solfège et la musique sur un trombone à l'Indiana University. BOOKER avait pour idole Ray CHARLES pendant la période où ce dernier enregistrait chez Atlantic.
A la mÕme époque, Steve CROOPER, 27 ans, (qui a commencé à jouer de la guitare à 11 ans), est diplomé de Messick High School de Memphis et assistant à la Memphis State University. Il est habituellement A & R Director à Stax Record, producteur et compositeur reconnu. Il est guitariste rythmique aux MG's.
"Duck" DUNN, qui a 28 ans, rejoint les MG's après leur succès 'Tic-Tac-Toe', a été sur tous les disques suivants. Il a développé son style sur 'Respect' d'Otis Redding, sur 'Knock on Wood' de Eddie Floyd et sur 'Hold on, I'm comin'' de Sam an Dave.
Al JACKSON, 33 ans, est considéré un des meilleurs batteurs de l'époque. Il joue sur un rythme simple et direct.
Le groupe se sépare en 1971 mais en 1973 ils font de décevantes retrouvailles, Carsett Whitsett (claviers) et Bobby Manuel (guitare) remplaçant Jones et Cropper.
Jackson est assassiné en 1975 et trois ans plus tard Cropper et Dunn se joignent aux Blues Brothers dans le film. Leur association avec le Blues Brother Band se poursuivit jusque dans les années 90.
La plupart des hits de BOOKER T. & THE MG'S sont de leur composition.
