En 1953, James Brown rejoint The Gospel Starlighters, un quartet vocal dirigé par Bobby Byrd. La formation va passer d'un répertoire gospel à un répertoire rythm'n'blues et son nom devient The Famous Flames, avec James Brown comme élément principal.
Ils enregistrent 'Please Please Please' à Macon en 1955. Le label King/Federal à Cincinnati les fait signer en 1956. The Famous Flames deviennent James Brown & The Famous Flames.
En 1957, lorsque Little Richard quitte le rock'n'roll pour la religion, James Brown le remplace pour la tournée qu'il devait faire dans le sud. Plusieurs membres de la formation de Little Richard 'The UPSETTERS', entrent dans les Famous Flames.
Avec 'Try Me', James Brown obtient son premier hit No1 en Octobre 1958. Le succès commence.
James Brown a enregistré de nombreux instrumentaux, soit en albums instrumentaux, soit sur des albums vocaux.
