Ce groupe du Nouveau-mexique, formé en 1957 à RATON (Nouveau-Mexique) est le premier représentant du son Tex-Mex dans le rock'n'roll instrumental de la fin des années 50 au début des années 60.
Le nom du groupe est venu à la suite d'une 'standing ovation' après qu'ils aient joué "Great Balls of Fire" lors d'un concours à la Raton High School PTA de New Mexico (USA) en janvier 1958. A la fin de la mÕme année, ils auditionnent au célèbre studio de Norman PETTY à Clovis (Nouveau-Mexique).
Les Fireballs placent 3 titres au Top 40 : 'Torquay', 'Bulldog' et 'Quite A Party'. Avec leur staccato à la guitare, ils préfigurent le surf à venir.
Les Fireballs utilisent le même studio que Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly & the Crickets avaient le lundi et le mardi soir pour enregistrer, les Fireballs avaient le mercredi soir pour leurs premières sessions.
Les Fireballs ont ajouté leurs instruments sur des maquettes enregistrées par Buddy afin de les commercialiser à titre posthume.
En 1963, The Fireballs jouent derrière le chanteur Jimmy GILMER. En temps que Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs, ils ont un des plus gros hits de 1963, "Sugar Shack" (Le son caractéristique provient d'un précurseur des synthétiseurs : le Solovox).
En plus de leurs propres enregistrements, Norman Petty embauche les Fireballs comme musiciens de studio. Ils jouent avec Carolyn Hester et Arthur Alexander.
Un titre similaire, "Daisy Petal Pickin'," entre au Top 20, mais l'invasion anglaise les stope immédiatement.
Les FIREBALLS ont un son souvent très proche du surf primitif ou pré-surf.
The Fireballs, sans Gilmer, signant chez Atlantic en 1967, effectuent un retour inattendu en 1968, quand leur "Bottle of Wine" (chanté par le groupe lui-même) entre au Top 10.
Le groupe s'arrête à la fin des années 60.
'Bulldog' est à plus d'un titre précurseur du surf à venir : sa structure, la réverbe, la formation du groupe (GGDB : 2 guitares, 1 basse, 1 batterie) caractéristique. Ce titre a été repris de nombreuses fois par les groupes de surf.
