Derrière HOT BUTTER se cache le musicien Stan FREE (claviers) que l'on trouve dans différents titres de groupes ou artistes comme the Monkees, Arlo Guthrie ou John Denver. FREE a sorti plusieurs simples sous son propre nom durant les années 60. Il a été membre du First Moog Quartet dirigé par Gershon Kingsley. Pendant leur tournée aux Etats-Unis en 1969, la formation jouait l'instrumental 'Popcorn' écrit par Kingsley en 1969 pour l'album 'Music To Moog By.
En 1971, FREE ré-enregistre 'Popcorn' sous le nom de HOT BUTTER. Ce titre grimpe dans le top 10 Américain et Anglais.
