Groupe qui fit la liaison entre le rock et le surf.
Le saxophoniste Johnny PARIS alias John POCISK, est le leader de ce groupe formé en 1958 à Toledo, Ohio.
Le groupe est composé au moment de Red River Rock' de l'organiste P. TESLUK, du guitariste D. YORKO, du bassiste L. 'Butch' MATTICE et du batteur Don STACZEK. Ce dernier est remplacé fin 1959, par un batteur de Detroit Bill SAVITCH qui jouait précédemment avec THE ROYALTONES. A cette époque le groupe commence à connaitre le succès en public.
Irving Micahnick et Harry Blak entrepreneurs de Détroit leur font signer un contrat début 1959, après les avoir vu jouer au Toledo's Pearson Park. Ils passent ensuite au nouveau label de Morty Craft: Warwick.
Les HURRICANES remportent un 1er hit en 1959 (Le groupe s'appelle alors The ORBITS) avec 'Crossfire' qui n'a pas encore le fameux son d'orgue qui fera la réputation du groupe.
Leur plus grand hit fut la même année le fameux 'Red River Rock' (adaptation du traditionnel 'Red River Valley') dont l'instrument vedette était l'orgue électrique, une innovation à l'époque.
Le groupe re¡oit cette année là, le Cashbox Magazine Award comme "Top Instrumental Group". Ce n'est que le premier d'une longue série de récompenses et de disques d'or. Nombre de leurs titres sont composés par Ira MACK et Tom KING.
En 1960, JOHNNY & THE HURRICANES fait le tour du monde. (l'Australie, la Nouvelle-Zélande, le Japon, l'Angleterre, l'Allemagne et d'autres pays européens).
A leur retour, ils changent de label et signent chez Big Top Records à New York. Mais leur popularité commence à baisser.
Célèbre par cette caractéristique intrumentale, le groupe réussit à figurer régulièrement dans les hit-parades juqu'en 1961, avec entre autres 'Beatnik Fly', 'Down yonder', 'Rocking Goose' (NÉ1 en Angleterre mais NÉ60 dans les charts américains) et 'You Are My Sunshine'.
Le groupe initial se sépare en 1961.
Johnny PARIS s'installe en Europe, à Hambourg en Allemagne, et poursuit des tournées avec d'autres Hurricanes jusque dans les années 70 et 80.
