Sander L. "Sandy" NELSON est né à Santa Monica, Californie.
Son frère étant projectionniste à la 20ème Century Fox, Snady travaille brièvement à la Fox dans sa jeunesse. Il obtient ses premiers instruments de batterie à l'âge de 7 ans. A 12 ans, il joue des percussions dans l'orchestre de son école.
Ses camarades de lycée s'appellent Nancy Sinatra, Jan Berry et Dean Torrence (JAN & DEAN), et un étrange gamin nommé Phil SPECTOR.
Son premier groupe, The Barons, était dirigé par Jan & Dean, jusqu'à ce que Jan parte au service militaire et Dean fasse équipe avec Arnie Ginsberg pour leur premier hit "Jennie Lee". Après avoir quitté le lycée, Nelson rejoint un groupe local KIP TYLER & The FLIPS avec son ami et pianiste Bruce JOHNSTON, ce dernier devenant célèbre avec les BEACH BOYS.
The Flips jouait dans le Show de Rock'n Roll de Art Laboe dans les alentours de Los Angeles. Phil SPECTOR tenait la guitare. Spector ayant de plus grandes ambitions engage Nelson pour jouer de la batterie sur une démo d'une de ses chansons: "To Know Him is To Love Him" pour son groupe les Teddy Bears. Cette chanson devient numéro 1 mais Spector engage Hal BLAINE pour ses futures sessions.
Nelson trouve alors en Richie PODOLOR, un ami, un guitariste (qui jouait pour Spector) et un studio d'enregistrement. Podolor a, l'année précédente gouté au succés en faisant parti du groupe de studio The PETS, qui sorti le hit instrumental "Chua-Hua-Hua" (N∞34 du hit US). Il encourage Sandy Nelson d'enregistrer un solo de batterie sur un morceau, comme dans "Topsy Part II" de Cozy COLE.
Nelson propose "Teen Beat", un titre de sa composition à Laboe, qui le retravaille et en fait un tube du rock instrumental (N∞ 4 dans les charts US) et propulse Nelson sur le devant de la scène instrumentale. Il signe avec Imperial Records (label de FATS DOMINO et Ricky Nelson) et s'entoure prudemment de musiciens de talent comme Rene HALL, Ernie FREEMAN, Red CALLENDER et Jim HORN. Mais cela ne donne pas grand chose et enregistre comme batteur pour des chanteurs tels que Gary Paxton and His Hollywood Argyles ("Alley Oop") et Kathy Young and The Innocents ("A Thousand Stars").
Fin 1961, Imperial était prêt à le lâcher et il semblait que Nelson ne resterait dans l'Instrumental Hall of Fame que pour cet unique titre. Il n'en ft rien et Nelson enregistra dans son garage, sur un magnétophone avec Podolor à la guitare, un morceau de sa composition, le grandiose "Let There Be Drums". Il entre grace à ce titre pour la seconde fois dans le Top 10 US et l'album contenant "Let There Be Drums" se vend au point de rester dans le "Billboard album charts" 46 semaines de suite. Cet album contient le morceau "Birth Of The Beat" comprenant un solo d'une dizaine de minutes.
1962 apporte "Drums Are My Beat", le 3ème tube de Sandy Nelson (N∞29 au Top 40 US). Dans ce titre le piano joué par Nelson lui-même, est au premier plan. Il obtient cette année là sept autres simples dans les charts dont "All Night Long" (N∞75) et "And Then There Were Drums" (N∞65).
Nelson est victime, en avril 1963, d'un grave accident de moto. Il percute un bus scolaire et perd son pied droit. A 24 ans , la carrière de Nelson semble compromise. Mais il réagit et aménage sa batterie pour continuer à jouer. Autre problème, Imperial est vendu à Liberty Records. Il est obligé de faire de nouvelles versions de ses anciens tubes. Nelson subit l'alcoolisme et ses reprises ne sont pas à la hauteur ("Teen Beat'65", "Let There Be Drums'66", ) bien qu'il puisse encore être capable de talent comme sur "Drums A Go Go".
Au début des années 70, il est désintoxiqué et revient à son premier amour: le jazz. Il recommence à jouer avec un petit groupe dans un bar de Santa Monica, avec lequel il reste pendant 10 ans. En 1982, il crée son propre label et produit "A Drum Is A Woman" qu'il renomme plus tard "Drum Tunnel".
Aujourd'hui retiré dans le Désert du Mojave, vivant dans un mobile home, il continue d'écrire de la musique.
