Ce groupe démarre sous le nom de The TWANGS. Ils sont découverts par World Pacific, ils deviennent The SANDELLS.
Ils étaient très influencés par les VENTURES et Duane EDDY.
Gaston Georis disait qu'ils n'utilisaient qu'occasionellement le style stacato du surf et qu'ils préféraient le son "mouillé" de la réverb.
Ils se retrouvent à enregistrer la bande son du film de Bruce Brown 'The Endless Summer'.
Lorsque le film est devenu connu, ils changèrent leur nom en The SANDALS.
