INFORMATIONS

    Les SHADOWS furent avant l'arrivée des BEATLES, le groupe anglais le plus célèbre du monde.

     Hank MARVIN  et Bruce Welsh se rencontrent à Newcastle et forment un groupe de skiffle appelé THE RAILROADERS en 1957. Ils partent pour Londres et forment avec le chanteur Peter Chester THE CHESTERNUTS, Ce groupe sort un simple chez Columbia.

    Le manager de Cliff Richard découvre MARVIN qui joue dans un bar et lui offre une audition dans le groupe de Cliff, The DRIFTERS. Marvin accepte à la condition que WELCH l'accompagne en tant que guitariste rhythmique. Ils rencontrent bientôt le bassiste  Jet HARRIS  et le batteur  Tony MEEHAN  qui s'intègrent au groupe. S'appelant d'abord les DRIFTERS (formation S1), comme le célèbre groupe doo-wap américain, ils changent de nom pour éviter la confusion, Jet Harris propose les SHADOWS (formation S2).

    En 1961, les Shadows composent 'Apache', c'est le premier de leurs nombreux hits. Brian BENNETT (du groupe de Marty WILD les Wildcats) qui remplace plus tard Tony MEEHAN réalise le fameux solo de 'Little B'.

    Entre 1960 et 1965, Cliff Richard et les Shadows classent tous leurs simples au Top 10 GB. Les Shadows eurent leurs propres succès avec 24 tubes instrumentaux en huit ans, dont quatre No1 en plus d''Apache': 'Kon Tiki' en 1961, 'Wonderful Land' en 1962, 'Dance On' en 1963 et 'Foot Tapper' en 1963.

    Pendant l'année 1962, Jet Harris et Tony Meehan se lancent en créant un duo. Meehan fut remplacé par Brian Bennet à la batterie. Le contrat de Brian "Licorice" Locking à la basse fut bref et il fut bientôt remplacé à son tour par John Rostill.

    L'année 1968 voit la séparation des Shadows mais ils se retrouvent occasionnellement pour rejouer avec Cliff Richard. En février 1968, lors d'une tournée en Australie, Bruce et Hank rencontrent John FARRAR, avec lequel ils fondèrent l'année suivante le trio MARVIN, WELCH & FARRAR. Le trio a pas mal de succès au début des années 70, mais éclate bientôt, chacun partant de son côté avec d'autres projets.

    Ils se retrouvent en 1975 lors du Grand Prix de l'Eurovision de la chanson avec 'Let Me Be The One'. Les 13 et 14 Juin 1975, MARVIN, WELCH, BENNET, FARRAR et le bassiste Alan TARNEY donnèrent deux concerts à l'Olympia qui firent l'objet d'un enregistrement public ('The Shadows 'Live in Paris').

    A l'occasion de la sortie d'une compilation par EMI 'Twenty Golden Greats' en 1977, les Shadows se reforment pour une tournée triomphale. Des tubes suivent en 1978 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' et le thème du film 'Deer Hunter' en 1979.

    Essentiellement instrumentale, vers la fin, Bruce WELCH et Hank MARVIN composèrent quelques chansons. Les Shadows enregistrent toujours.

    Au moment où leur style définit les bases du son Australien des ATLANTICS et RAY COLUMBUS, certains de leurs titres étaient joués et enregistrés aux Etats-unis (The CHALLENGERS).
